Water softener in Belgium

Hard water leaves scale on taps, shower heads and water heaters. A softener can slow that build-up, but only when it is set to your actual hardness and keeps a sensible residual level. Water made too soft is equally unwelcome for pipework, taps and heating appliances.

Our approach

Measure, size, set, remeasure

For every softener we follow the same order: record hardness and usage, fit safely with a bypass, set residual hardness, remeasure at the outlet and explain salt and resin care. The effect stays verifiable.

  1. 01

    Measure hardness and usage

We measure hardness at a representative outlet and review household water use. Those figures set capacity and the regeneration schedule so the unit is not undersized and does not waste salt.

  2. 02

    Plan position and connections

The softener goes after the meter, with accessible salt tank, power supply and a proper drain for regeneration. Where useful we plan a branch for untreated water, for example outside taps or specific appliances.

  3. 03

    Fit with a bypass

We mount the unit with bypass and isolation valves, connect safely to the main, and check pressure after fitting. The system can later be isolated without cutting off the whole property.

  4. 04

    Set regeneration and residual hardness

From the measured values we set regeneration and the target residual hardness. We explain what you can monitor yourself, such as salt level and signs that resin is saturating.

  5. 05

    Remeasure and handover

At the treated outlet we measure again and compare to the target value. You receive a short brief on refilling salt, checking filters and when resin or brine tank service makes sense.

Why scale builds up

When softening may be worthwhile

Calcium and magnesium in mains water form limescale on hot surfaces. You notice it first as white marks on glassware and aerators, then as weaker flow or stiff tap handles.

In cylinders and instantaneous heaters, scale cuts heat transfer. The appliance runs longer for the same temperature, which costs energy and loads elements or heat exchangers sooner.

Not every home needs a softener. Sometimes targeted care of taps or the water heater is enough. That is why we measure first and discuss honestly whether installation fits your hardness, usage and setup.

Signs to watch

Hints that hard water is loading your installation

These signs point to scale build-up. Measurement shows whether a softener is the right next step or targeted maintenance is enough.

  • White marks on shower walls, glassware or taps that return quickly after cleaning.
  • Encrusted aerators with weak or uneven flow.
  • Cylinder or instantaneous heater warming up more slowly or delivering less hot water.
  • Stiff mixer taps or cartridges that seize again soon after service.
  • Visible scale in boilers, pipe sections or heat exchangers after inspection.
  • Heavy salt use or frequent regeneration on an existing softener with no measurement to confirm performance.

Before the visit

What to prepare before we arrive

A short preparation makes fitting or recommissioning smoother. You do not need to dismantle the unit yourself.

  1. 01

    Clear access to the area

Free space around the planned location, salt tank and drain. For replacement, allow access to the existing bypass and shut-offs.

  2. 02

    Note complaints and usage

Say where you see scale, how many people live in the property and whether a softener is already fitted. That helps sizing and the regeneration schedule.

  3. 03

Share unit details if you supply it

If you have chosen a model, note make, type and manual. We check that capacity and connections suit your measurement.

  4. 04

Know where the main stopcock is

For installation we must be able to isolate the supply. Knowing where the main valve is saves time on arrival.

Transparent pricing

What shapes the price of a softener install

Installation on quote: we set the price after a visit on site.

Price depends on access to the main, connection type, any bypass or extra branch, and whether you supply the unit. A straightforward fit after the meter is usually quicker than complex pipe runs or a dedicated untreated line.

You receive an agreed price after measurement and position choice on site, before work starts. The unit itself is quoted separately when we supply it. Call our 24/7 line for an initial indication, with no obligation.

Benefits

  • Hardness measured before and after installation rather than guessed
  • Setting on a residual value that spares heaters, taps and pipework
  • Bypass and valves so maintenance needs no shutdown of the whole property
  • Guidance on salt use, resin condition and a realistic service interval

What does softener installation cost?

Installation on quote: we set the price after a visit on site. The final price depends on the pipework, the bypass, the position chosen and how easy it is to reach.

Is a water softener always needed with hard water?

Not always. We measure hardness at the outlet first and look at where you notice scale. Sometimes tap or water heater maintenance is enough. We only advise installation when measurement and usage justify it, always with a sensible residual hardness.

Why do you measure before and after installation?

The setting must match your actual water, not a default figure. Measuring before sizes the unit. Measuring after proves residual hardness at the outlet is correct and regeneration is running as intended.

How do I maintain salt and resin?

The brine tank needs regular refilling according to use and regeneration. Resin saturates over time and performance then drops clearly. At handover we explain which signs to watch and when a technical check or resin renewal makes sense.

Does a softener protect my boiler?

Less scale in the hot water circuit reduces build-up on elements and heat exchangers, provided residual hardness is not set too low. Combining softening with periodic water heater service helps keep output and reliability. We discuss what fits your situation.

Can I keep untreated water for outside or drinking?

Often yes. With a bypass and a separate branch, one line stays untreated where you want it, for example an outside tap or specific appliances. We plan that branch during installation when you ask for it.

When should you call a plumber straight away?

Some signs are worth acting on straight away: a leak you cannot stop, water coming through a ceiling or a wall, a damp patch that keeps spreading, a sudden drop in pressure throughout the house, or water near a consumer unit or an electrical appliance. Close the main stop valve first: it limits the damage while the cause is being traced.
