Lighting installation in Belgium

Lighting that flickers, dims poorly or fails after a short time is almost never a problem with the lamp itself. The combination of driver, dimmer and circuit load determines the behaviour, and those three have to match. So we calculate the load per circuit, check whether the dimmer suits the chosen driver type, and fit the luminaires with switching that matches how the room is used.

Our approach

Measure lighting circuits and remake switch points safely

We measure the lighting circuit, check switch and box for heat and tightness, match dimmer or driver to the load and test under normal use.

  1. 01

    Review need and circuit

We go through which zones need light and for what, and measure the existing circuit load. That shows whether the intended extension fits this circuit or needs one of its own.

  2. 02

    Match the equipment

Driver, dimmer and luminaire are chosen as a set, since a mismatched dimmer causes flicker. For recessed fittings the space for heat dissipation is checked as well.

  3. 03

    Fit the luminaires

The circuit is isolated and the fittings mounted and connected. Penetrations and joints go in accessible positions so a later replacement needs no breaking out.

  4. 04

    Test and configure

We test every switch arrangement and the full dimming range, from minimum to maximum. The circuit is remeasured and labelled, and adjustable drivers set to the chosen value.

Common causes

Why lighting flickers, fails or switches poorly

Flickering light or a fitting that runs warm often comes from a loose neutral or earth, an overloaded lighting circuit or a dimmer that does not match the LED load. The symptom looks like a lamp fault while the error sits in the switching.

A switch that sparks or a box without firm fixing creates contact resistance and heat. With LED retrofits without a matching driver or without the dimmer’s minimum load, flicker returns even after lamp changes.

Outdoor or damp zones with fittings below the right IP rating draw moisture into the joint. That explains faults mainly after rain or in the morning, separate from the lamp itself.

Signs to watch

When lighting shows an electrical problem

These signs point to a fault on the lighting circuit or to gear that does not match the load.

  • Lamps flicker, especially when dimming or with LEDs.
  • A switch or fitting feels warm or crackles.
  • Part of the lighting fails while sockets stay live.
  • The dimmer hums, heats up or drives lamps unevenly.
  • Outdoor lighting fails after rain or stays damp in the box.
  • New LED lamps burn briefly or stay unstable on the existing dimmer.

Until we arrive

What to do with problematic lighting

Small observations speed diagnosis. Do not open boxes if there is heat or moisture.

  1. 01

Switch off the lighting circuit if there is heat or smell

If a switch or fitting is warm or smells burnt, turn off the relevant breaker until we measure.

  2. 02

    Note lamp and dimmer type

Say whether you use LEDs and whether a dimmer is fitted. Incompatibility is a frequent cause of flicker.

  3. 03

    Say indoor or outdoor

Note if the fault follows rain or only appears indoors. That steers material choice and IP checks.

  4. 04

    Call with those details

Give the room, fitting count and whether lamps were changed recently. Our line is available 24/7.

Transparent pricing

What sets the price

Installation on quote: we set the price after a visit on site.

Price depends on how many points are involved, whether only a switch or also cabling and a dimmer are needed, and whether outdoor gear with a higher IP rating is required. One faulty switch is not charged like a full lighting-circuit rethink.

You get the final price after on-site finding, before fitting. Call for a first indication, with no obligation.

Benefits

  • Load per circuit calculated before luminaires are fitted
  • Dimmer and driver matched to avoid flicker
  • Switching arranged around the real use of the room
  • Heat dissipation of recessed fittings included in the choice
  • Circuit remeasured and labelled after installation

What does repairing or renewing lighting points cost?

Installation on quote: we set the price after a visit on site. The final price depends on the number of light points, the fittings you choose, how high up or accessible they are and whether any wiring needs replacing.

Why do my LED lamps flicker on the existing dimmer?

Many dimmers are built for a different load. We check compatibility, minimum load and wiring, then match dimmer or driver so the LED runs steady.

Is a warm switch dangerous?

Heat points to contact resistance or overload. Switch the circuit off and have it measured; continuing can damage the box further.

Can you reconnect outdoor lighting weather-tight?

Yes. We choose boxes and glands by IP rating, check seals and remeasure the circuit so moisture does not return at once.

Do you work with smart switches?

Yes, provided manual control still works without an app. We only add smart control once that fallback is in place.

What warranty applies to lighting work?

Up to 2 years warranty on labour; parts carry the manufacturer’s warranty.

When should you call an electrician straight away?

Some signs are worth acting on: a burning smell, a socket or switch that feels unusually hot, scorch marks, crackling sounds, breakers that keep tripping, an unexplained loss of power, or an electrical problem after water has got in. Where there are signs of overheating, or a fault that keeps returning, avoid resetting the circuit again and again before the cause has been found.

Why Van Dijk Home

Flickering lighting is mostly a matching problem between dimmer and driver. We calculate circuit load, match those three, and test the full dimming range after installation, with accessible joints for later maintenance.
