Kitchen drain line cleaning in Belgium

In a kitchen, the problem rarely comes from the sink itself: it is the waste line that fouls up. With every wash-up, a little cooking grease cools and sticks to the wall of the pipe. Year after year that layer thickens and narrows the passage, until the water stops draining.

Our method

Cleaning the line along its whole length

Grease sticks to the entire wall of the run, never to a single point. Our work therefore targets the pipe along its length, to take the deposit off and restore the original diameter.

  1. 01

    Inspecting the line

We follow the waste from the sink through to the connection on the network, to locate the fouling and measure how far the grease deposit actually extends along the pipe.

  2. 02

    Camera check where useful

For a recurring problem or an older run, a camera reveals the pipe's real condition: grease layer, narrowing, a crack or a tired connection.

  3. 03

    Deep cleaning

High-pressure jetting or mechanical clearing depending on the case: we lift the grease off the full circumference and the full length of the pipe.

  4. 04

    Test and advice

We check the flow and the neighbouring outlets, then leave you concrete advice on slowing down how fast the deposit builds back up.

The shared line

When the sink and the dishwasher join the same pipe

In the vast majority of kitchens, the dishwasher's drain hose connects to the sink waste. The two appliances therefore share one pipe, which takes both the grease from dishes rinsed by hand and the hot, fatty discharge from the dishwasher. That concentration clearly speeds up how the deposit forms: the shared line fouls up faster than a sink waste on its own.

The most telling symptom appears when the dishwasher drains: the water, pushed into an already narrowed pipe, has nowhere to go and rises into the sink bowl. Many people then suspect the appliance, when the cause actually sits in the shared line, further along inside the wall. A plunger on the sink changes nothing, because the narrowing is not under the bowl but on the waste line itself.

This is exactly the situation where cleaning the whole line proves its worth. By cleaning the run along its full length, we give both the sink and the dishwasher a normal flow again, and we remove the cause of the water backing up instead of masking its effects.

Why the line fouls up

A deposit that builds along the whole length of the pipe

The kitchen is the room where the waste pipe takes the most fat. Cooking oil, melted butter, leftover sauces, grease off the plates: all of it goes down the sink as a liquid, lukewarm and harmless-looking. But as soon as that mixture meets the colder walls of the pipe, it sets and settles. Unlike a clean, localised blockage, this fouling spreads gradually along the entire length of the waste line.

To that grease are added the small food particles that get past the plughole, the coffee grounds, the grains of rice and pasta that swell in water. Trapped in the greasy layer already stuck to the walls, they form an ever denser deposit that reduces the pipe's usable diameter. Limescale from the water and detergent residue harden the whole thing, turning a thin film into a stubborn crust that hot water alone can no longer shift.

That is why a slow kitchen waste calls for cleaning the line, not a surface clearance. As long as the grease stays stuck along the whole wall, the passage closes up again shortly after each partial clearance. Treating the run as a whole is the only way to get a result that genuinely lasts.

Warning signs

The signs of a fouled kitchen waste line

These symptoms point to grease building up in the waste line, well beyond the sink trap.

  • The water takes longer and longer to drain while you wash up.
  • Gurgling can be heard in the sink or the neighbouring pipes.
  • A greasy smell rises from the waste, even when nothing is sitting in it.
  • Water rises in the bowl at the moment the dishwasher drains.
  • The slowdown keeps returning despite repeated clearances.
  • Dark or greasy marks appear around the plughole.

Until we arrive

What you can try before we come round

A few simple steps limit how much worse a slowing kitchen line gets. The main thing: do not add more grease, and do not damage the pipe.

  1. 01

    Remove the visible residue

Take out the strainer and clear by hand the food scraps and grease within reach just below the plughole.

  2. 02

    Flush with good hot water

A hot-water flush helps soften a fresh, light deposit, with no guarantee on an older, hardened layer.

  3. 03

    No chemical drain cleaner

These products barely touch set grease and they attack PVC and seals, while making the cleaning job harder.

  4. 04

    Stop loading the waste

Avoid pouring oils and fats down it, and space out dishwasher cycles so the narrowing does not get worse.

Prevention and price

Keeping the line clean after the job

Our call-outs start from €63.60 incl. VAT (6 % for homes over 10 years old, otherwise 21 %).

Once the line is clean, a few habits are enough to slow the deposit coming back considerably. Never pour oils, cooking fats or liquid sauces down the sink: collect them in a container and bin them, because once they cool inside the pipe they form the base of the next blockage. Scrape plates before rinsing them, hold back coffee grounds, rice and pasta, and flush regularly with good hot water to carry away greasy residue while it is still fresh.

On price, the rate depends on the length of the line, the thickness of the deposit and the method required, never on guesswork. You get a clear estimate before we begin, with no surprise on the invoice, and we only close the job once the flow is fully restored. We answer all your price questions directly before we set off.

Benefits

  • Suited to family kitchens and commercial ones alike

How much does kitchen drain line cleaning cost?

Our call-outs start from €63.60 incl. VAT (6 % for homes over 10 years old, otherwise 21 %). On price, the rate depends on the length of the line, the thickness of the deposit and the method required, never on guesswork.

Why does my kitchen line keep blocking in the same place?

Because the real problem is almost always a layer of grease coating the entire wall of the waste line, not an isolated blockage. When only one point is cleared with an auger, a passage is punched through that layer, but the deposit stays along the rest of the run and closes up within weeks. Only a full clean, lifting the grease off the whole circumference and the whole length of the pipe, puts an end to those repeats.

What is the difference between unblocking the sink and cleaning the kitchen line?

Unblocking the sink deals with the trap and the first few centimetres under the bowl, where the most reachable residue gathers. Cleaning the line deals with the waste run itself, inside the wall and through to the connection on the network. If the water stays slow after a trap clean, the deposit sits further along: the line is what needs treating.

Does the dishwasher drain into the same pipe as the sink?

In the vast majority of kitchens, yes: its drain hose connects to the sink waste. That is why water often rises into the bowl as the machine drains, when the shared line is narrowed. The symptom shows at the sink, but the cause sits on the common run.

Are chemical drain cleaners enough against grease?

No. They are designed to dissolve hair and organic matter, and they barely touch a cold, hardened layer of grease. They then sit in the pipe, attack PVC and seals, and make the cleaning more dangerous for the technician. On a kitchen waste, mechanical or high-pressure cleaning remains the only effective method.

How long does cleaning a kitchen line take?

A domestic waste line is generally cleaned in one to two hours, depending on its length and the thickness of the deposit. A commercial kitchen, or a line that has never been maintained, takes longer, and we tell you that before we begin rather than once we are on site.

When should you call a drain technician straight away?

Some signs mean the blockage is no longer local: waste water backing up into a shower, sink or toilet, several fixtures draining slowly at the same time, water rising from a yard gully, or a sewer smell that lingers despite ventilation. In those cases, avoid reaching for chemical drain cleaners again and again: they attack seals and pipework without reaching a blockage further down the run.

Why Van Dijk Home

A kitchen waste line is treated as a run coated in grease, not as a simple blockage. We clean the pipe along its whole length, from the sink trap through to the connection shared with the dishwasher, so the deposit comes off the wall instead of being punched through for a while.
