Rewiring and compliance in Belgium

An installation is rewired when the existing circuits no longer match how the property is used, or when an inspection raises points that a small intervention cannot resolve. The inspection itself is carried out by an accredited body, not by us: our role is to bring the installation into a state where it can be assessed, and to supply the measurements and schedule that go with it.

Rewiring and compliance: electrician working on an electrical box

Our approach

Renew wiring with a measurable handover

We decide which runs truly need work, pull in conduit where possible, size conductors by length and load, match protection, and measure insulation and continuity at handover.

  1. 01

    Record the existing condition

We measure the circuits, check the earthing and review any points from an earlier inspection. Each point is named so it is clear which work follows from it and which does not.

  2. 02

    Redefine the distribution

Circuits are redistributed according to how the rooms are used now. Rooms with heavy appliances get a dedicated circuit, so the load no longer sits on a shared one.

  3. 03

    Work in phases

Work proceeds zone by zone so the property stays usable during the job. New runs go in conduit so a later replacement does not require opening up again.

  4. 04

    Measure and compile the file

Afterwards all circuits are measured and the RCDs tested. The schedule and test record are compiled so the accredited body can assess the installation.

Common causes

When wiring is due for renewal

Brittle insulation, aluminium or undersized conductors, boxes with no room for modern terminals or routes cut by renovations make local patches unreliable. Targeted renewal of runs is then safer than another temporary fix.

A home with too few circuits for kitchen, workshop or charging forces overload on existing cables. Rewiring lets section, conduit and distribution match real use again.

Moisture, rodents or mechanical damage behind walls create insulation faults that return after short repairs. Opening the route and pulling new cable stops that cycle.

Signs to watch

Signs that wiring is structurally inadequate

These signs point to cables that no longer match use or safety needs.

  • Insulation faults or outages return on the same route after short repairs.
  • Boxes are overcrowded or terminals sit on damaged conductors.
  • There is no conduit or draw wire left, so further pulls are impossible.
  • Large appliances or a charge point need a section the existing cable cannot carry.
  • During renovation, cut or unlabelled runs appear.
  • Heat or smell follows a specific cable path in the wall.

Until we arrive

What to prepare for rewiring works

Planning zones and access shortens the survey. Do not open walls before we have measured.

  1. 01

    Mark priority spaces

Say which rooms or zones come first: kitchen, workshop, outdoor or a full floor. That steers phasing.

  2. 02

    Note planned appliances

Mention induction, a charge point or heavy machines. Section and circuit count depend on that.

  3. 03

    Make technical spaces reachable

Board, crawl space or loft must be reachable for routing. Clear access to boxes you know.

  4. 04

    Call with that scope

Say whether it is one run or several floors. Our line is available 24/7.

Transparent pricing

What sets the price

Installation on quote: we set the price after a visit on site.

Price depends on length and reachability of runs, open or closed finishes, and whether the board is renewed too. Pulling one kitchen circuit is not charged like a full-home rethink.

You get the final price after inventory and on-site measurement, before opening or pulling starts. Call for a first indication, with no obligation.

Benefits

  • Existing inspection points reviewed one by one before work starts
  • Circuits redistributed around the current use of the property
  • Earthing and equipotential bonding checked and measured
  • Schedule and test record prepared for the accredited body
  • Work phased so the property stays habitable throughout

What does rewiring cost?

Installation on quote: we set the price after a visit on site. The final price depends on the length of the circuits being rewired, how accessible the cable runs are, the finish (surface-mounted or concealed) and whether the consumer unit also needs work.

Does the whole home always need rewiring?

No. We often renew only the runs that measurements or use show as inadequate. Other zones stay if insulation and continuity are sound.

How much finish needs opening?

We follow existing conduit or route via technical spaces where possible. Opening is limited to what is needed to pull and remeasure safely.

Is the consumer unit adapted at the same time?

New circuits need matching protection and labelling. Whether the board is extended or renewed follows the inventory.

How long does rewiring take?

It depends on run count and finishes. We often phase by zone so parts of the home stay usable. Timing depends on availability.

What warranty applies to renewed wiring?

Up to 2 years warranty on labour; parts carry the manufacturer’s warranty.

When should you call an electrician straight away?

Some signs are worth acting on: a burning smell, a socket or switch that feels unusually hot, scorch marks, crackling sounds, breakers that keep tripping, an unexplained loss of power, or an electrical problem after water has got in. Where there are signs of overheating, or a fault that keeps returning, avoid resetting the circuit again and again before the cause has been found.

Why Van Dijk Home

An inspection is not a formality but an assessment against measurable points, and those points can only be supplied with measurements and a schedule. We bring the installation into that state, redistribute the circuits around current use, and hand over the file.
