Smart home in Belgium

With smart home systems the key design rule is that the property keeps working when the control layer fails: lighting and heating must stay operable by hand, even with no network or app. Then comes the question of what really needs to be automatic, because any automation nobody understands ends up switched off. So we start from a limited set of useful scenarios, build the base locally, and document what is controlled where.

Our approach

Set up smart control with local fallback first

We define a limited set of useful scenes, keep every circuit manually operable, fit modules locally, test circuit by circuit and document what is set where.

  1. 01

    Define the scenarios

We review which actions recur daily and which of them are worth automating. Rarely used actions stay manual, because a scenario nobody knows about gets disabled eventually anyway.

  2. 02

    Build base and fallback

Control is built so every circuit stays operable locally and by hand. That fallback is the core of the design, since a network fault must not leave the property in the dark.

  3. 03

    Fit and pair

Modules are installed in the board or local to the circuit, then paired to the controller. We test each circuit on its own before building scenarios so faults stay attributable.

  4. 04

    Configure and hand over

The scenarios are configured and walked through together, and the settings documented. You receive an overview of what is controlled where, so you can make or commission a change.

Common causes

Why smart home control fails or becomes unusable

Smart control that only works through an app, without local manual operation, stops when the network or cloud fails. Occupants then switch scenes off and the installation loses its value.

Too many automations nobody understands, modules without documentation or unlabelled circuits make maintenance impossible. A later electrician cannot adapt the control safely.

Control that takes over heavy loads or heating without a correct fallback or measured circuits creates faults that look like classic electrical failures. The cause then sits in the logic, not in the cable.

Signs to watch

When smart control needs attention

These signs point to missing fallback, unclear scenes or control that blocks manual use.

  • Lights or blinds no longer respond without an app or Wi-Fi.
  • Scenes are unknown to occupants and end up switched off.
  • There is no documentation of what each module controls.
  • A network outage leaves parts of the home uncontrollable.
  • Board circuits are not tied to the smart names.
  • Heating or heavy loads are steered without a clear manual override.

Until we arrive

What to prepare for a smart-home visit

Clear wishes about what truly needs automation speed up the design. Do not change anything that disables manual control.

  1. 01

    List daily actions that repeat

Note lighting, blinds or heating you truly want automated. What is rare is better left manual.

  2. 02

    Gather existing apps or manuals

If modules or hubs already exist, keep manuals and access details ready without sharing passwords over unsafe channels.

  3. 03

    Say which rooms have priority

We often start with living spaces and bedrooms. Extension follows once the base is stable.

  4. 04

    Call with that scope

Say whether it is new control or recovery of an existing setup. Our line is available 24/7.

Transparent pricing

What sets the price

Installation on quote: we set the price after a visit on site.

Price depends on circuit count, module type and whether cabling or board work is included. A limited lighting scene is not charged like control of lighting, blinds and heating across the whole home.

You get the final price after on-site inventory, before fitting or programming. Call for a first indication, with no obligation.

Benefits

  • Manual operation keeps working with no network or app
  • Control built locally so the basics do not depend on a service
  • A limited set of scenarios matching daily use
  • Circuits labelled and documented as in a conventional installation
  • Set up to be extendable so additions stay possible later

What does a smart-home setup cost?

Installation on quote: we set the price after a visit on site. The final price depends on the number of circuits to be controlled, the number and type of modules, and whether extra wiring or board work is needed.

Does the home still work if the network fails?

That is the design rule. Every circuit stays locally and manually operable. Scenes are a layer on top, not the only way to switch.

Must every room become smart at once?

No. We start with a limited set of useful scenes. Extension follows once the base is documented and stable.

Can you clean up a chaotic existing installation?

Yes. We inventory modules, restore manual control where missing, limit scenes and document the control again.

Do you also link heating or blinds?

Yes, when classic control remains available as fallback and the circuits are correctly protected.

What warranty applies to smart-home work?

Up to 2 years warranty on labour; parts carry the manufacturer’s warranty.

When should you call an electrician straight away?

Some signs are worth acting on: a burning smell, a socket or switch that feels unusually hot, scorch marks, crackling sounds, breakers that keep tripping, an unexplained loss of power, or an electrical problem after water has got in. Where there are signs of overheating, or a fault that keeps returning, avoid resetting the circuit again and again before the cause has been found.

Why Van Dijk Home

Most smart home installations fail practically rather than technically: too much automation that nobody understands any more. We keep manual operation as the fallback, limit scenarios to what is useful daily, and document the settings.
