Gas leak detection in Belgium
A smell of gas is an emergency, not an ordinary leak. Natural gas is colourless, flammable and sometimes hard to smell. Carbon monoxide (CO) from incomplete combustion is equally dangerous and odourless.

Our approach
Gas leak detection with safety as a fixed order
We always follow the same order: protocol and isolation, detection with equipment, connection checks, repair after a price agreement, pressure test and written findings.
- 01
Make the situation safe
We only start once the zone is safe under the protocol. No open flame, no spark-producing work in a suspect room. If the main gas valve is safely reachable, we isolate the circuit before measuring.
- 02
Locate the leak with detection equipment
With gas detection equipment we follow concentrations along pipes, cocks and appliance connections. Where needed a soap test confirms a suspect fitting, without opening the installation for no reason.
- 03
Check connections and isolate temporarily
We inspect visible pipework and joints, including behind furniture or near gas appliances. Once a leak is confirmed we isolate temporarily so the situation stays controlled until repair.
- 04
Repair and run the pressure test
After a price agreement we repair or replace the leaking seal, coupler or pipe section. A pressure test follows. Only with a stable result may the installation return to service.
- 05
Written findings and handover
You receive a short report of what we found, what was repaired and what still deserves preventive attention. We show where the gas shut-off sits for later use.
Common causes
Where a gas leak often comes from
Not every gas leak has the same origin. Worn seals, loose or poorly tightened joints, wear on pipe sections or a poorly made connection are common. Vibration around appliances can also make a joint start leaking over time.
A leak at an appliance connection needs a different approach from a leak on the fixed gas pipe. That is why we first establish whether the problem sits at the appliance, the flexible connection or the fixed pipe. We then repair the right point instead of only a symptom.
Incomplete combustion can release CO without a clear gas smell. A poorly maintained boiler, water heater or cooker and a blocked flue raise that risk. If you doubt a smell, a hiss or CO symptoms, treat it as urgent and call 112 first.
Related work
From emergency shut-off to safe repair
Sometimes rapid isolation is needed, sometimes structural work on the gas pipe or a check on the hot-water side follows. We match the next step to what detection shows.
Signals to watch
Spot a gas leak or CO risk in time
These signs call for the safety protocol, not DIY work. If in doubt: ventilate, leave, call 112, then Van Dijk Home.
- A clear or faint smell of gas in or around the home.
- A hissing sound near a gas pipe, cock or appliance connection.
- Unexplained high gas use without extra demand.
- Bubbles in standing water above a suspect pipe zone.
- Dead or yellowing plants above an outdoor pipe run.
- Headache, nausea or drowsiness near a gas appliance (possible CO).
Until we arrive
What to do if you smell gas
Follow this protocol calmly but firmly. Safety comes before any call to the plumber.
- 01
Ventilate and do not touch switches
Open windows and doors. Do not switch lights on or off, use no open flame and avoid sparks. Take pets with you if you leave the home.
- 02
Leave the building
Go outside. Close the main gas valve only if it is safely reachable without going back inside or creating a spark.
- 03
Call 112 first
For an acute gas smell or a confirmed leak, always alert the emergency services first. Do not wait for someone else to do it.
- 04
Then call Van Dijk Home
Once 112 has been alerted, call us for detection and safe repair when the situation allows. Briefly describe what you smelled or heard.
Transparent pricing
What determines the price
Our call-outs start from €72.60 incl. 21% VAT.
The price depends on the nature of the leak, how reachable the pipe or connection is, and whether a local repair or a longer pipe section is needed. Detection with equipment is a different workload from a full repair with pressure test.
You get a price agreement after the on-site assessment, before we start the repair. Call us for a first indication, no obligation.
Benefits
- Safety protocol first: ventilate, no switches, 112 before any other step
- Detection with proper equipment instead of guesswork
- Check of pipes, joints and appliance connections
- Temporary isolation of the leak when the situation requires it
- Repair followed by a pressure test before return to service
- Written findings after the repair

+32 2 000 00 00What does gas leak detection cost?
Our call-outs start from €72.60 incl. 21% VAT. The final price depends on the type of leak, how accessible the pipes and appliances are and the extent of the repair, including the final pressure test.
What should I do if I smell gas?
No switches, no flame, no sparks. Ventilate, leave the home, close the main gas valve only if that is safe, call 112 first, then call Van Dijk Home for detection and repair.
Can I repair a gas leak myself?
No. Work on gas pipes and connections belongs to trained technicians with the right equipment. A faulty repair can be life-threatening. Never try to work on the gas pipe yourself.
How do I spot a gas leak without a clear smell?
Some gases are hard to smell. Watch for hissing near pipes, bubbles in standing water, unexplained high use or dead vegetation above an outdoor pipe. We also locate such leaks with detection equipment.
Is a gas leak dangerous, and what about CO?
Yes. Natural gas is flammable and can explode at sufficient concentration. Carbon monoxide from incomplete combustion is odourless and toxic. Never underestimate a suspicion: follow the protocol and have it checked.
How long does gas leak detection take?
A first diagnosis often happens in the same visit, depending on access to pipes and appliances. Wider repair with a pressure test takes extra time. The safety steps set the pace.
When should you call a heating engineer straight away?
If you smell gas, leave the building and call 112 before doing anything else. Other signs also call for action: a carbon monoxide alarm going off, soot marks or fumes around the boiler, a lockout that keeps returning, or a leak on the heating circuit. Avoid resetting the boiler over and over, as the lockout protects the installation and points to a fault that needs tracing.
