Pipe descaling in Belgium
Some pipes do not block overnight: they narrow slowly. Year after year, hard-water scale settles on the inner wall and shrinks the usable diameter. Water ends up draining poorly even though nothing has fallen in to stop it.

Our method
Descaling that truly restores the diameter
Removing scale from a pipe is not improvised. We follow a precise method to lift the deposit along its full length, without stressing the sound material underneath.
- 01
Deposit diagnosis
We assess how far and how hard the scale has gone, and separate generalised scaling from a local obstacle. That steers the whole visit.
- 02
Matched settings
Pressure and jetting head are carefully set to the pipe diameter and material: lift the scale cleanly, never damage the sound wall.
- 03
High-pressure descaling
A rotating jet attacks the mineral layer around the full circumference and breaks it free to the wall, restoring the pipe’s original diameter.
- 04
Flow check
We test the restored flow, confirm there is no remaining pinch point, and advise how to space returns according to your water hardness.
Why high pressure
Where chemical products cannot reach
Many people start by pouring a shop descaler down the drain. Understandable, but the effect stays limited to the first centimetres and the surface of the deposit. Deep scale, hardened over years, is not reached: the product is diluted and washed away before it can dissolve the full layer. Flow improves for a while, then worsens again because the real cause is still there.
Used repeatedly, aggressive products also attack joints and weaken pipe material, without breaking compact scale. High-pressure descaling works differently: a strong water jet, guided by a rotating head, shears the mineral layer around the full circumference and lifts it back to the original wall.
The difference is in the setting. Pressure and head are chosen for material and diameter, so scale comes off without touching sound pipe. Once the layer is gone, usable diameter is back and water flows freely again.
A problem that builds slowly
Scale shrinks your pipes from the inside
In many Belgian regions the mains supply is hard: rich in calcium and magnesium. With every pass, a tiny fraction of those minerals settles on the inner wall. The process is invisible and very gradual, but it never stops: the scale layer thickens year on year and the usable diameter shrinks with it. What was a wide drain becomes a narrow passage.
The result is nothing like a sudden blockage. There is no object to remove, no single trigger: only water that takes longer and longer to leave, overflows that return soon after each clean, falling pressure. People often assume a local clog, when the real problem runs the full length of the pipe. That is what makes scale so deceptive, and so stubborn.
In very hard-water areas the deposit has often had time to harden and compact. The older the layer, the less a chemical product can reach it. Scale then has to be lifted mechanically around the full circumference to restore the original diameter, not merely drilled through the middle.
Around this problem
Scale, and what goes with it
Descaling often sits with other work, depending on whether the slowdown is pure mineral or mixed. These are the most useful links.
- High-pressure cleaning - general jetting when the deposit is not only mineral
- Drain unblocking - if a local clog sits on top of the narrowing
- Camera inspection - measure thickness and length of the deposit
- Kitchen drain unblocking - when grease and scale build up together
- Sink unblocking - trap and short run slowed by scale
Signals to watch
Signs of a scaled pipe
Scale does not show as a sudden blockage, but as a slow, steady decline in flow. These signals should raise concern.
- Water drains more and more slowly, with nothing fallen into the pipe.
- Overflows return soon after every clean.
- Water pressure in the home has fallen gradually.
- The drain sounds louder than before: a sign of a narrowed passage.
- Taps, showers and appliances show visible scale and lose performance.
- You are in a hard-water area and the slowdown has lasted for months.
While you wait for us
What you can do before our visit
A few simple steps help us diagnose correctly and treat scale at the source, rather than masking the symptom.
- 01
Note how long it has been slowing
Flow that has been slow for months points clearly to scaling rather than a sudden clog.
- 02
Avoid aggressive descalers
Chemical products do not reach deep scale and damage pipes: better not to multiply them.
- 03
List the points affected
Tell us which drains and appliances are hit: that helps us gauge how far the deposit goes.
- 04
Clear access to the drains
Free the space around the points to treat so descaling can start without lost time.
Transparent pricing
What determines the price
Our call-outs start from €63.60 incl. VAT (6 % for homes over 10 years old, otherwise 21 %).
The price depends on how far the deposit has gone, the length of pipe involved and access to the drains. We assess the situation and tell you the price before we start, so you decide with the facts.
We only treat the job as finished once diameter and flow are truly restored. Call us: we answer pricing questions directly, with no obligation.

- Method matched to material and diameter
- Mechanical treatment, no corrosive product
- Camera check before and after on request
- Effective on hard water and old deposits
- Upkeep advice to space returns

What is the difference between descaling and a classic unblock?
A classic unblock targets a precise obstacle (wipe, grease wad, root) that suddenly stops flow. Descaling treats a mineral layer that has built slowly over the full wall for years. There is no single clog to pull out, but a scale coat to lift along a long run to restore the original diameter. It is deeper work than a one-spot clear.
How do I know if my pipes are scaled?
The most common sign is progressive slowing, with nothing fallen into the pipe, lasting weeks or months. Overflows that return after every clean, a louder drain sound, falling pressure, taps and appliances showing visible scale: all point that way. In a hard-water area the suspicion is stronger still. A camera or flow check often confirms how far the deposit goes.
Why are shop descalers not enough?
Their action stays limited to the first centimetres and the surface of the scale. Deep, hardened deposit is not reached: the product is diluted and washed away before the full layer dissolves. Used repeatedly they also damage joints and material. High-pressure descaling lifts the full circumference mechanically back to the wall.
Does high-pressure descaling damage pipes?
Not when it is set correctly. Pressure and head are matched to diameter and material (PVC, cast iron, clay) to lift scale without stressing sound wall. That is why diagnosis comes before jetting, not every pipe gets the same nozzle or pressure.
How often should you descale in a hard-water area?
It depends on water hardness, how old the deposit is and how the system is used. After the visit we give a realistic upkeep rhythm for your installation. Some runs stay fine for years. Others on very hard water need closer checks. The aim is to space returns, not impose a useless package.
Can scale damage my sanitary appliances?
Indirectly, yes. A reduced diameter makes pumps, water heaters and taps work against higher resistance, and visible scale on appliances often goes with scale in the pipes. Restoring free flow eases the whole network. Pipe descaling treats the cause on the drain side, not only the symptom at the tap.
When should you call a drain technician straight away?
Some signs mean the blockage is no longer local: waste water backing up into a shower, sink or toilet, several fixtures draining slowly at the same time, water rising from a yard gully, or a sewer smell that lingers despite ventilation. In those cases, avoid reaching for chemical drain cleaners again and again: they attack seals and pipework without reaching a blockage further down the run.

Why Van Dijk Home
Successful descaling is measured by the diameter you get back, not by that day’s flow alone. We lift the layer around the full circumference, match pressure to the material, and tell you how often to check for build-up. Up to 2 years warranty on labour; parts carry the manufacturer’s warranty.
