Water heater maintenance in Belgium
Scale in the tank, a spent magnesium anode or a safety valve that no longer opens often creep in quietly. You notice when water takes longer to heat, the unit gets noisy or the final temperature drops. Maintenance is not a new installation: we descale where the design allows, check or replace the anode, test safety valve and pressure, adjust thermostat and element where relevant, and look for rust or an internal leak.

Our approach
Water heater service in fixed steps
We follow the same order: record type and condition, descale and flush, test anode and safety, remeasure and advise honestly on the next step.
- 01
Identify type and accessibility
We establish whether it is an electric cylinder, gas heater or instantaneous unit and how reachable the anode, drain and safety valve are. That finding sets which steps are safe and worthwhile.
- 02
Proposal for the service visit
You receive a proposal for flush, descaling, checks and any wear parts such as anode or safety valve. We start once you agree, so the parts are ready.
- 03
Drain, flush and descale
The vessel is drained and flushed safely by type. Where possible we remove scale from wall and element so heat transfers properly again.
- 04
Inspect anode, safety and controls
We check whether the anode still protects, whether the safety valve opens and pressure is correct, and review thermostat, element and seals for rust or an internal leak.
- 05
Return to service, measure and advise
After filling and venting we measure heat-up and final temperature. You get a short report, guidance on the next service interval by water hardness and use, and clear advice on maintain, repair or replace.
Why service matters
What quietly erodes efficiency and reliability
Hard water deposits scale on the wall and heating element. That layer blocks heat, so the unit runs longer for the same hot water and your energy bill rises before you see a hard failure.
The magnesium anode sacrifices itself to protect the steel tank. Once it is gone, corrosion works on the inside. Rust and porous spots do not always show outside first, but they do show up as less volume or odd noise.
The safety valve must relieve overpressure and excess temperature. If it stays shut from scale or age, pressure can climb unnoticed. A poorly set thermostat or element adds to that risk and wears parts faster.
Related work
From service to replacement or leak repair
Sometimes a service visit is enough, sometimes a new unit or leak repair is the sensible next step. We tie the follow-up to what we see inside the tank and at the connections.
- Water heater installation - new fit or swap when the tank is rusted through
- Water softener - limit hardness to slow scale build-up
- Plumbing maintenance - shut-offs, traps and visible pipework in one round
- Leak repair - when the leak is at a connection or pipe, not the tank wall
- Emergency plumbing - heavy leak, no hot water or unsafe pressure
Warning signs
When to schedule maintenance
These signs suggest scale, anode or safety are slipping. A planned visit often avoids a costly replacement or a night without hot water.
- Water takes noticeably longer to heat than before.
- Rumbling, popping or boiling sounds while heating.
- Less hot water from the same heater without higher use.
- Drips or moisture at the safety valve or drain without an obvious pipe leak.
- Rust-coloured water briefly when opening a hot tap.
- The last service was more than about two years ago with hard water or heavy use.
Before the visit
What you can prepare
A little preparation keeps the visit faster and safer. You do not need to open the appliance yourself.
- 01
Clear access to the heater
Leave room around the unit, safety valve and drain. That avoids moving furniture on site.
- 02
Note make, type and symptoms
Write down if you have less hot water, hear noise or see moisture. Mention when the heater was last serviced if you know.
- 03
Keep cold water available
For flushing and refilling we need cold water and a drain or waste point nearby.
- 04
Call us with a short description
State the appliance type and what you notice. We then schedule depending on the area and availability.
Clear pricing
What sets the price
Our call-outs start from €63.60 incl. VAT (6 % for homes over 10 years old, otherwise 21 %).
The cost depends on heater type, how reachable the anode and drain are, and whether descaling, anode or safety valve replacement is needed. A compact electric cylinder is not the same scope as a large tank with awkward access.
You receive the final price after we assess type and condition on site, before service starts. Parts such as anode or valve are listed separately when replacement is required. Call us for an initial indication, with no obligation.
Benefits
- Descaling of tank and heating element where the design allows
- Check or replacement of the magnesium anode and seals
- Test of safety valve, pressure and stable final temperature
- Honest guidance on maintain, repair or replace

+32 2 000 00 00How much does water heater maintenance cost?
Our call-outs start from €63.60 incl. VAT (6 % for homes over 10 years old, otherwise 21 %). The cost depends on heater type, how reachable the anode and drain are, and whether descaling, anode or safety valve replacement is needed.
How often should a water heater be serviced?
How often depends mainly on water hardness and how much hot water you use: we advise you after a first visit. With soft water or light use the interval can be longer. After the visit we give a concrete interval for your situation.
What does descaling involve?
We drain the tank safely and flush away sediment and scale where the design allows. Sometimes we treat the heating element as well. The aim is to restore heat transfer and limit wear, not to rescue a tank that is already rusted through.
What does the magnesium anode do?
The anode corrodes on purpose faster than the steel tank so the wall does not rust. Once it is spent, the tank itself is at risk. During service we check whether replacement is needed.
Why is there less hot water or noise?
Scale on the element lengthens heat-up and can cause noise. A finished anode or rust inside can reduce usable volume. Service fixes that while the tank is still sound; if it is corroded through, we advise replacement.
Can service save a leaking tank?
If the leak is at a connection, safety valve or seal, repair may be enough. If the steel tank is perforated by rust, replacement is required: descaling does not seal a holed wall. We say that clearly after inspection.
Is water heater maintenance available across Belgium?
Not everywhere: we carry out service and advice in Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia, except the province of Luxembourg. When we can attend depends on the area and availability.
When should you call a plumber straight away?
Some signs are worth acting on straight away: a leak you cannot stop, water coming through a ceiling or a wall, a damp patch that keeps spreading, a sudden drop in pressure throughout the house, or water near a consumer unit or an electrical appliance. Close the main stop valve first: it limits the damage while the cause is being traced.

Why Van Dijk Home
Scale acts as insulation, a spent anode lets the tank corrode and a stuck safety valve is a safety risk. Van Dijk Home descales where it can, replaces worn anodes and valves rather than simply retightening, remeasures and states clearly when replacement beats another service visit. Up to 2 years warranty on labour; parts carry the manufacturer’s warranty.
